VBA ROSTER LOCK SYSTEM

The VBA Roster Lock System is designed to provide roster stability while still allowing players opportunities to earn larger roles and starting positions.

ROSTER LIMITS

Each VBA team may carry a maximum of 7 players:

  • 5 Starters

  • 2 Reserves

 

A team may have a maximum of:

  • 5 Gold and Blue Locks combined

  • 2 White Locks

 

Positions 6 and 7 are always White Locks.

Teams must establish all five starter positions before locking reserve players.

 

🟡 GOLD LOCK — STARTER

A Gold Lock represents a secured starting position for the current season.

Gold Locks are reserved for the team's five starting positions:

  • Point Guard

  • Shooting Guard

  • Small Forward

  • Power Forward

  • Center

 

Gold Lock Rights

  • Locked into a starting position for the current season

  • Mutual agreement between player and team

  • Represents an official starter

 

Gold Lock Restrictions

A Gold Lock may be removed by team management due to:

  • Missing games

  • Missing practices

  • Repeated tardiness

  • Team disciplinary decisions

 

Gold Lock Limit

Maximum of 5 per team.

 

 

🔵 BLUE LOCK — TEAM RIGHTS (PRESEASON ONLY)

Blue Locks are used during:

  • Combines

  • Summer League

  • Preseason

 

A Blue Lock indicates that a player has committed to a team while maintaining restricted free-agent status.

Blue Lock Rights

  • Team receives matching rights

  • Player may negotiate with other teams

  • Current team may match competing offers

  • Player may be promoted directly to a Gold Lock

 

Blue Lock Restrictions

Blue Locks are only valid during:

  • Combines

  • Summer League

  • Preseason

 

Gold + Blue Lock Rule

A team may never exceed five combined Gold and Blue Locks.

 

Examples:

✅ 5 Gold / 0 Blue

✅ 4 Gold / 1 Blue

✅ 3 Gold / 2 Blue

❌ 5 Gold / 1 Blue

❌ 4 Gold / 2 Blue

 

 

WHITE LOCK — RESERVE

A White Lock represents a locked reserve player.

White Locks occupy roster spots 6 and 7.

White Lock Rights

  • Team receives matching rights

  • Player may negotiate Gold Lock opportunities

  • Current team may match competing offers

  • Player may be promoted to Gold Lock

 

White Lock Limit

Maximum of 2 per team.

 

White Lock Promotion Rule

If a Gold Lock player:

  • Misses a game

  • Misses a practice

  • Arrives late

and a White Lock player successfully fills the role,

the team may:

  • Promote the White Lock to Gold Lock

  • Remove the original Gold Lock

 

The promoted player retains the Gold Lock position until they lose it through absence, tardiness, disciplinary action, or team management decision.

 

🔓 UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT

Players without a lock designation are considered unrestricted free agents.

 

Free Agent Rights

  • May negotiate with any team

  • May accept offers from any team

  • No matching rights apply

 

Free Agent Requirement

Players must notify their current team before being added to another team's roster.

 

ROSTER MOVEMENT COMMANDS

All roster transactions must be submitted in:

#roster-movements (on Discord)

Examples:

✅ Add @Player

✅ Gold Lock @Player

✅ Blue Lock @Player

✅ White Lock @Player

✅ Drop @Player

 

Players must be tagged in all roster transactions for notification purposes.

SUMMARY

🟡 Gold Lock = Starter

🔵 Blue Lock = Team Rights (Combine/Preseason Only)

⚪ White Lock = Reserve

🔓 Free Agent = Open Market

 

Maximum Roster Size: 7 Players

Maximum Gold + Blue Locks: 5 Combined

Maximum White Locks: 2

Positions 6 & 7 Are Always White Locks
